Koha: Brief Introduction

This tutorial presents an overview of the Koha main features and functionalities for patrons and librarians. Patrons can search through the catalogues but also logging into their patrons personal account and view account summary, messages, hold and checkout items, fines as well as access their borrowing history. There is also an overview of the librarian interface with the available modules like acquisition, cataloguing, patron management, circulation, serials, reports and system administration.

Tutorials have been group into:

  • Librarian Intranet
    This is the administration interface for the librarians/staff of the library.
  • Patron OPAC
    This is the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) which provides  the user interface for the public as the name suggests. Its the point of  user interaction with the library resources.
  • Systems Librarian
    System librarian is the staff member with IT skills combined with library system operations.

Acquisition/ordering module

Search Groups in Koha

Managing Lists in the OPAC

Tagging in Koha

This video will show your patrons how to add tags via the Koha OPAC. Users tag records with keywords; this is sort of user generated subject headings list. The good thing about tagging is you don’t have to pick from a preselected set of categories. You can categorize things not just by what they are in and of themselves, but what they are to you.

Search to Hold in Koha

System Librarian

Adding Custom HTML to the Patron Summary in the OPAC

When patrons are logged into the OPAC in Koha they see a summary of the items they have checked out. In Koha 3.4 you can add additional links to that page by using the new OPACMySummaryHTML preference. This video will walk you through adding a Facebook ‘Like’ button to that page.
